Dental Material Biocompatibility

Biological Dentistry

Biological Dentistry can be categorized as dentistry with a conscience; a consciousness of how the treatments of the teeth and jaws will affect the health of the individual and how it will affect the immune system. Will it be congruent and health enhancing or will the treatments be health stressors to the individual. In the past only lip service was paid to the biocompatibility of materials used in dentistry. The material's compatibility was judged on a general basis and not on an individual basis that is required for biocompatibility.

  Dear Farid,

So much is happening in the field of dentistry that I have started to use this newsletter to inform my patients about what is new in dentitsry, I am very excited about this and I hope that you enjoy it. I would like to take this opprtunity to thank you for supporting my practice all these years and for putting your trust in our services. I have studied and introduced Biological dentistry into my practice for the last few years and I am convinced, that this is the way of the future. In the next few issues of this newsletter I will bring different aspects of biological dentistry to you.

As humanity is evolving, so are our approaches in dental health. As the twenty-first century is upon us, a new era of dentistry is coming of age, an era that combines a sophisticated mechanical approach with a more evolved biological or pro-biotic (life supporting) system of dental medicine. It is like a marriage between high-tech dentistry and ancient wisdom that acknowledges and respects the health of the entire body. Below are five areas that biological dentistry focuses on:

    1. Dental material biocompatibility
    2. Focal oral infection
    3. Energy disturbances to the body
    4. Influence of nutrition on oral health
    5. Cranial, dental, sacral complex

In this issue I will just deal with Dental material biocompatibility.

The topic that has dominated this area is the use of mercury in amalgam fillings. The unfortunate misstated biocompatibility of this material is well known by many readers. I will refer to a book in this area: " It's All in Your Head ", The Link Between Mercury Amalgam and Illness by Dr. Hal Huggins. He clearly states the dangerous effect of mercury in dental amalgams in the following 5 categories:

    1. Neurological e.g.: seizures and MS
    2. Immunological e.g.: Lupus, arthritis
    3. Cardiovascular e.g.: blood pressure,
    4. Collagen: e.g.: Osteoarthritis
    5. Miscellaneous e.g.: chronic fatigue, brain fog

Today we can test Biocompatibility of all the dental materials with VEGA testing. I work with one of the leading Naturopathic Physicians in Ottawa, Dr Toplak, to get this testing done.
